Imposter Game Words
Word lists that actually work. Every word passes the five-clue test, and every list mixes things with moments everyone has lived through. Open a list, or play it right on the page.
Our editorial standard
Why most word lists don’t work
Most lists online are Apple, Dog, Chair. The imposter guesses them from the hint, and civilians run out of clues. Ours follow four rules.
The five-clue test
A civilian must be able to give five different clues without saying the word. If you run out at two, the word is out.
Not the first thing that comes to mind
If the hint is “Food”, the imposter shouldn’t be able to guess “Pizza”. Obvious words end rounds before they start.
Moments, not objects
A third of every list is things everyone has lived through: splitting the bill, lost keys, reply all. Moments make better stories, and stories make better clues.
Pairs are neighbours, not synonyms
Undercover pairs like Llama and Alpaca are close enough to blend in, different enough to argue about. Jam and Jelly are the same word in a different jar.

Imposter game generator
Imposter word generator
Pick one list or mix several. The game draws a word at random, never repeats until a list runs low, and deals the roles on one phone.
Hush keeps the score. Rounds carry over, so the first to 5 points wins the night.
FAQ
About the word lists
What are good words for the imposter game?
Words everyone knows but can describe in many ways: moments (lost keys, Monday morning), places, foods, animals. Avoid very obvious words for a category and words only one person in the room would know.
What categories can you use?
Anything the whole table knows. Food, animals, sports, household things, party moments and everyday life are free here; the app adds office life, school days, screen time, travel, movies, jobs, nature, spooky stuff and pop culture.
How many words do you need?
One per round, but a list of 100 or more stops repeats. Every free list here has 120 to 140 words, and the game skips words you’ve already had.
Can I print the word lists?
Yes. Open any category and press “Print the list”: you get the full list on one page, without the rest of the site.
